VFT Creation Activity

Climate in my Backyard

Co-created by the Stanford VFT Team and Sherri C., middle-school Science and Reading teacher.

Grades 6-12 Earth Science Environmental Science Life Science
Climate in my Backyard

Share how a changing climate is impacting the people and places in your community.

In this activity, students will create a VFT to:

  • Identify and describe a locally relevant climate change indicator in their community.
  • Highlight the ways in which that indicator impacts their lives and the lives of the plants, animals, and people there.
  • Showcase their understanding of the NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas: Weather and Climate (ESS2.D), Human Impacts on Earth Systems (ESS3.C), and Global Climate Change Adaptation (ESS3.D).

Note: this VFT Creation Project requires that you and/or your students capture your own media. Outlining a media-capture plan is a helpful step in this process. See Educator Guide 7: Create Your Own 360° Media to learn more.

  • Designed for Grades 6-12

  • Takes approximately 3-5 hours
